Today is International Left Handers Day. It's also Friday 13th. The associations between left handers and erm, being evil go back thousands of years. Are we really evil? Read on for left handed myths, legends, superstitions and general idiocy...
- Through the ages, the devil is usually portrayed as a left hander in pictures and imagery.
Supposedly, we can only see ghosts if we look over our left shoulder.
A ringing in the right ear means that someone is praising you. In the left ear it means that someone is cursing you.
If you hear the sound of a cuckoo from the right it will be a lucky year. If the sound comes from the left it will be unlucky.
When leaving to go on a journey, if your right foot itches you're bound to have a good journey. If your left foot itches it will end in sorrow.
In Islam, the left hand and everything associated with it is seen as unclean. And Christianity is strongly based towards the right hand.
Polar bears are always left footed. And also, apparently, parrots.
The figurehead on the Cutty Sark was a left-handed witch.
Studies have shown that left-handers are more likely to have allergies than right-handers.
Lefties have a lesser chance of surviving a hand-to-hand combat. (This one is my favourite. We have fingernails on both hands, right?)
Left-handedness is usually forced to right-handedness due to cultural impact. Sadly, this is the case across the globe. Many children are forced into right-handedness during the formative years. Cultural pressure is fast changing though due the impact of mass literacy on society.
Left-handed people have a shorter lifespan than right-handed counterparts. Statistics reveal that left-handed people are more likely to succumb to accident fatalities and other injuries that arise out of a state of 'affliction'. This is mainly due to majority people in the world being right-handed and hence the overall design of utilities being designed to accommodate the majority. Left-Hander Syndrome is a condition that is seen in left-handed people who are forced to write with their right hand; thus causing a mental state of confusion.
And lastly -
Famous left-handers include Bart Simpson, the Boston Strangler, Billy Corgan, Jimi Hendrix, Judy Garland and my personal favourite - Alan Funt, television producer. Brilliant.
