The Ugly House, or Ty Hyll, depending on how Welsh you are, is actually very pretty. I’ve seen uglier. Particularly in Coventry. But this house, in Betws-y-Coed, North Wales, has a myth behind it that I thought was quite cool when my Welsh friend was telling it to me. It’s the ‘Ty Un Nos’, or ‘house built in one night’. The story goes that under 15th century law, he who built a house between sunset and sunrise, with walls, roof and smoking chimney, could claim the freehold. So two outlaws did it. And they got the land. Crafty. This in the days before Ikea started selling flat pack houses.
But, because they put it up in such a hurry, supposedly it's really ugly.
It’s now a grade II listed building and people come from all over to see it. Then presumably climb up Snowdon.
I don’t know about you, but I’d live in it.
