Things I Want To Learn How To Do
By Iris Jones.
On a rainy October day like today, things to make you happy may include jumping in puddles or eating stodgy comfort food (I'm thinking bangers, mash and gravy sounds appropiate and delicious). It also seems like a good day to make a list - a list of all the things you want to do and WOULD do it only you had the time. Things to do in order to better yourself. Because how can you change the world for the better if you aren't satisfied with yourself?
'People need to be made more aware of the need to work at learning how to live because life is so quick and sometimes it goes away too quickly.' - Andy Warhol
1.) Learn to cook.
To help me, I have chosen my friend Lianne's blog, Everything Goes With Toast. And I will begin with potato skins stuffed with leek and bacon because that seems like just the right sort of food for today.
2.) Learn to bake.
To help me, Katiecakes has lots of delicious looking pictures. And Dudes With Beards Eating Cupcakes too obviously.
3.) Learn to draw.
My next door neighbour Hannah says that drawing can be taught, and that if you already follow other creative pursuits and have a good eye for things, you can learn to draw well if only you put the time and effort in.
Hannah, by the way, is a brilliant artist and some of her work lives here.
4.) Learn to speak French.
To help me, I listen to French Radio London which sounds very nice in my country cottage, but while I hope in time I'll become fluent just by listening to it, at the moment, a zombie apocalypse could be announced and I wouldn't know any different.
Incidentally, the French for 'living dead' is 'morts-vivants'. See what a beautiful language this is? This is why I must learn it immediately.
5.) Learn to play an instrument.
I recently made a pact with my friend Kate that we would learn bass guitar. Personally, I would pick up my drum lessons again. I wonder if this virtual drum kit can help?
6.) Learn to take better photographs.
Because there's always something new to learn about what you already do.
Spilling Light is my favourite photography blog.
7.) Learn to be good and happy.
And for that, like everything else, I can learn from the greats. My friends and family.
And from one blog in particular, run by one of the most good people I know: Our Invincible Summer which teaches me on a daily basis that being happy is really a very simple concept that comes from very simple ideas. The same ideas that led to 100Happy.
'The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you.' - B.B King
Make your list. Nothing is too frivolous or ridiculous to go on there. For example, my secret number 8 is 'Get pilots licence'. Enjoy.
